File Secure Free, a Windows application that carries the tagline “All-in-one Tool to Protect File and Privacy” will help you prevent others from accessing your files, will securely remove the files you want to get rid of, will back up your files just in case something goes wrong, and it will lock up your USB disk so others can’t plug in their portable storage devices.

You can install File Secure Free on 32 and 64-bit editions of Windows 7, Vista, or XP. To do so, you must first download a 2.1MB installation file and run it. A setup wizard will show up and ask you to choose between a Full installation (main program and shortcuts) and a Custom installation (choose if you want shortcuts). Once the installation process completes, your browser will launch and you will be directed to the official File Secure Free website.

On the dark-themed File Secure Free interface, in the left hand side, you will see four buttons that correspond to the four things the application can do: File Backup, File Encryptor, File Shredder, and Lockup. This sort of layout is quite easy to get accustomed to and it’s safe to say that even a complete newbie will immediately feel at home using the application.

You never know when something could go wrong; you never know when a data loss accident could occur. To protect your files from such an unthinkable situation, File Secure Free offers to back up your important files. Should something go wrong, you can recover your data from the backups.

Privacy is important for a lot of computer users, including myself. The File Secure Free application protects your privacy in two ways: it can encrypt the files you specify (by password protecting and encrypting files, you can ensure only you have access to them) and it can securely delete files (by shredding files you ensure data recovery tools cannot bring them back to life). The application uses the military standard AES encryption algorithm to protect your files and lets you choose between multiple shredding algorithms for securely deleting files.

There’s one more thing the File Secure Free application does: it can lock up your USB disk.

All the abovementioned functionality won’t cost you a thing, as I’m sure you already figured out from the application’s name - File Secure Free.

There’s plenty to like about File Secure Free: it has a good looking interface, it’s incredibly easy to use, protects your privacy and your files, and it’s free.

Pros

The system requirements are quite low, so it will work without a problem on just about any PC. You can choose between a Full and a Custom installation. The dark-themed interface is good looking and easy to use. File Secure Free does 4 things: backs up data, password protects and encrypts files, shreds files, and locks the USD disk. The application is freeware.

Cons

Can’t password protect access to File Secure Free itself. Opens the browser and takes you to the official File Secure Free website once the installation completes.
